Meet Unsigned 2024 star Amber Sky

Courage, power, community, and communication – the four pillars that are giving Unsigned 2024 participant Amber Sky confidence in her work and that she’s who she wants to be as an artist.

“When I first began attending the sessions I was hoping that tutors Emma [O’Reilly] and Millie [Manders] would be able to help me figure out what direction I wanted to go in and how I wanted to be perceived by the audience. They did exactly that and helped me come up with the pillars which have helped me ever since,” says the 19-year-old, who was born in King’s Lynn and grew up in Norwich.

“I was made aware of the Unsigned programme when a friend of mine saw it being advertised on social media. As soon as I read about what they could offer me as a new artist and hearing about experiences from previous years, I was hooked.”

Amber, who juggles performing with working in hospitality, would love to be a full-time singer-songwriter.

“I’ve always loved performing, ever since I was a child I’ve been in dance, acting and singing classes. I learnt to play guitar when I was a teenager after years of going round my grandad’s and messing about with his. I also occasionally use keyboard to help me during my songwriting process.

“I can’t think of a specific moment where I decided that it was something I wanted to do professionally but I do remember the pivotal moment of when I wrote my first ‘proper song’ and ever since then I have been working hard to progress my skills.”

Norwich city centre shoppers may recognise Amber, who regularly busks there. She also enjoys performing at open mic nights and other small venues across the county.

“As I’m coming to the end of the programme, I’m more motivated than ever to continue growing my social media and my presence around Norwich’s venues. Writing music that will impact people and make them think about topics that may tend to be pushed away or forgotten about.”

Amber, who fuses the power of Paramore, the pop sensibilities of Taylor Swift, and the classic edge of The Cranberries, would recommend Unsigned to other young and upcoming artists looking for professional support and feedback to help them achieve their dreams.

“It’s done in a safe, fun, non-judgemental atmosphere which makes you feel like you knew the answers all along, you just needed a point in the right direction.”

You can listen to Amber on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. She’ll be performing at our annual Unsigned showcase, which this year takes place at Voodoo Daddy’s in Norwich. Get your tickets here.
