Give Norfolk’s disadvantaged young people the break they deserve in 2023

What would you do if I said you could change a young person’s life right now?

The Garage Trust’s mission is simple. To use dance, drama, and music to give disadvantaged youngsters across Norfolk a brighter future.

Youth support organisations are under immense pressure. More than half of those surveyed for a 2021 UK Youth report were operating at a reduced level. Nearly a quarter had been forced to close, either temporarily or permanently.

There are now nearly 800 less youth centres than ten years ago. In the 2016 State of the Nation report, social mobility in Norwich, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk was among the worst in England. Limiting youngsters’ prospects. Norwich itself was second from bottom.

That’s where our Big Breaks bursaries scheme for disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people at The Garage in Norwich and The Workshop in King’s Lynn comes in.

Since 2013, our support team has helped thousands of children and young people, with 90% of participants seeing a positive change to their lives thanks to our creative arts programmes.

Every one of them has been referred to us through our network of partners including schools, statutory bodies, local authorities, and charities like ourselves. Making sure places go to those who need them most.

We provide fun, positive creative arts activities. We help them access our popular school holiday programmes. Help with associated costs like transport, dancewear and equipment. We provide big nights out trips for young people and their families.

We give them the chance to gain nationally recognised Arts Awards qualifications. Our Creative Foundations course gives participants the confidence to develop their skills and includes free annual membership to our dance, theatre, and music classes.

So many more need our help. Every pound you donate will provide a welcoming, fun, supportive, safe space for these youngsters to be themselves. To boost their confidence, their hopes, their sense of belonging, of pride in themselves, and give them the life skills to unlock their potential.

If you can’t spare a pound, your time’s just as valuable. It can be anything from giving us some houseplant cuttings or home-baked biscuits we can turn into donations. We’ve currently got plants available in our cafe. On Monday 26 June we’ll have cakes made by our team.

If you or any groups with which you’re involved are looking for a charity to fundraise for, please think of us too.

If you’ve donated before, thank you. Your contribution is making someone’s life better. If you’d like to help us fundraise, email wayne.savage@thegarage.org.uk.
