  • More Information

    For singers and musicians.

What techniques are taught in this class?
This programme looks to develop your existing music skills and build confidence in performing. Whether you are a guitarist, piano player, drummer, singer or play any other instrument the programme will help you develop techniques for playing with other people and creating music for performance.

    What skills are developed/improved?
If you are a singer the vocal coach will work with you on developing your voice as an instrument, helping you with your vocal range, pitch, confidence and help you to prepare pieces for performance. Musicians will work under the guidance of the music tutor and build individual music skills while working with other musicians and singers in the group. There will be opportunities to adapt covers for performance and also work on your own song writing and original music.

How is a class structured/what do we do in a class?
This class runs for two hours each Monday with additional time for one to one tutorials or rehearsals with the tutors throughout the term.

Sometimes the class will be split into singers and musicians with each group getting time with the specialist tutors or vocal to develop skills. The group will also come together as a whole to create music and play together.

This programme gives people the opportunity to build confidence through working towards 2 small performances each term, one of these will be SLAM night on the Thursday evening of half term, the other performance may be a gig in our café, busking or something of a similar nature depending on the time of year and what events The Garage is involved in.

If you have your own instrument you would bring it along each week (if practical), The Garage has some equipment here such as piano, keyboard, drums, PA, MICs which can be used.

    Is it for me?
This class is for people aged 13-25yrs who have some skills in any instrument or singing and are looking to develop through creating music with other people. You would need to be committed to the weekly sessions and the 2 performances each term and motivated to practice at home.

There is opportunity to progress on to MDP Intermediate once your music skills and confidence has developed. MDP Intermediate work towards higher profile and bigger performances throughout the year.

What level is this class - beginner, improver, intermediate or advanced?
This is an improver level class which means you will need to come with some existing music or vocal skills; you may have had some lessons in the past or be self-taught or have natural talent and no previous training.

To see if the course is suitable you will need to meet the vocal coach or music tutor and play or sing a piece, we call this an ‘audition’. They will assess whether you are at the right level for the programme or would be better on the Intermediate or Beginner programme.

To arrange an audition please call 01603 283382 or email

This programme is supported with funding from Youth Music England. As with all of our classes and programmes termly fees apply. However, we do want financial restraints to be a barrier for young people participating and we therefore offer a number of free bursary places across our provision. If you would like to talk about accessing a free bursary please call reception and ask for Carrie Mansfield.
