Our three-week Face Painting course got off to a fab start last week. I went along to deliver the kit and meet the participants…and found myself becoming a model for the evening!

Ten participants arrived at Sheringham Community Centre eager to learn how to create amazing face paints under the guidance of professional body artist Hayley Bird.

Our group included mums with young families keen to face paint at school events and parties, sports centre staff who wanted to skill-up for their family fun days and a grandmother/granddaughter pair who had come along together to try something new.

Each participant was given a starter kit - worth £50 - to use on the course and practise at home. Hayley talked us through the paints and brushes before we got stuck in creating our first designs on own arms, then each other’s faces.

We learnt the ‘double-dip’ technique to create festival flowers and tried our hand at dots and swirls. Then Hayley showed us how to use thin and thick lines to create tiger stripes.

Hayley explained that the art of face painting is all about using shapes and lines to build a design, and you don’t have to be brilliant at drawing to be able to make a stunning face paint. A lot of the skill lies in getting the consistency of the paint right and practicing your brush and sponge techniques.

Hayley was really encouraging, and although our first attempts may not have been perfect, everyone left feeling that with a bit of practice we could all be a decent face painter. Next week – Spiderman!
